MADISON, N.J. - Coming off an outstanding 2018-19 campaign, the Drew University men's and women's golf teams will look to pick up where they left off last season under Head Coach
Maura Ballard as they enter the program's third season of varsity competition.
It was a banner year for the women's team, which captured the program's first-ever Landmark Conference title and made its debut at the NCAA Division III Championships. The men's squad also posted a solid performance at the Landmark Championships, earning runner-up honors.
Experience abounds on both rosters, as the Rangers graduated just one of its men's golfers and will return both defending Landmark Conference medalists.
Leading the way on the women's side will be junior
Lucy Lamb, who cruised to the Landmark Conference title with a 25-stroke victory. Her performance earned her Landmark Conference Player of the Year and First-Team All-Landmark Conference recognition. She led the Rangers with an 85.2 average, including an 82.8 during the spring, when she placed among the top-five at four different events. Lamb shot her best round of the season on the final day of the Landmark Championships, carding a 73 to shatter her own school record by six strokes.
Returning as the team's second-leading scorer from last season is sophomore
Cathy Bi, who averaged an 87.3 and captured First-Team All-Landmark Conference after tying for fifth at the conference championships. She carded a season-low of 81 in two different rounds.
Junior
Kristine Masseria also returns as one of the team's most consistent performers. She averaged a 91.7 a year ago and captured second-team all-conference honors for the second year in a row with her eighth-place finish at the Landmark Championships. She shot a season-low of 83 in her first round of the spring.
A pair of returning sophomores are also back after competing in nearly every match last season.
Cassidy Conklin averaged a 97.8 and carded a season-low of 88 while
Natalie Stilo posted a similar 99.5 average and a low round of 92.
In addition, seniors
Kristen Bubrowiecki and
Katie Jefferson return this season while sophomore
Jenna Du Plooy and freshmen
Alexandra Artigliere and
Abigail Haven will also look to make their mark.
Returning to pace the men's team is sophomore
Lucas Artigliere, who registered an impressive freshman campaign. He captured the Landmark Conference title in thrilling fashion, winning on two playoff holes, and earned both the Landmark Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards. He finished with a 2-under 70 in the second round, shaving two strokes off the school record he shared. For the season, Artigliere led the Rangers with an average of 76.9 and closed the year on a hot streak, shooting 75 or better in five of his last six rounds. He won his last two events, including Drew's Spring Brook Invitational.
Sophomore
Luis Ng Tang is also back after averaging an 83.3 and earning Second-Team All-Landmark Conference honors after tying for 11th at the conference championships. He posted a season-low 72 at the Landmark Conference Fall Preview.
Junior
Giovanni Albano, senior
Anthony Castronova, and sophomore
Matthew Chang also return after shooting at least 10 rounds last season. Albano averaged an 83.6 while Castronova was not far behind with an 85.5. Both carded a season-low of 76.
Junior
Michael Bliss also returns after averaging an 82.4 over eight rounds last season, when he shot a season-low of 78. He was a Second-Team All-Landmark Conference honoree as a freshman, when he tied for seventh at the 2018 conference championships.
Sophomore
Jake Zajdzinski also returns while freshmen
Jack Strippoli and
Brandon Talaska will provide additional depth.
The men's team opens the season this weekend, when it competes at the Middlebury College Duke Nelson Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The women's team kicks off its season on Tuesday at the Ursinus College Invitational.
