Season Preview: Men's Lacrosse

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's lacrosse team will be led by a strong core of returning players and a promising freshman class under third-year Head Coach Doug Sage.

Offensively, the Rangers bring back a pair of 20-goal scorers from last season. At attack, senior Kevin Goettlich returns after making his mark as a dangerous offensive weapon last season, leading the team in goals (23), assists (20), and points (43). He will be joined up front by classmate Jack Fatone along with freshmen Chuck Torikian and Craig Wilkie

In the midfield, the Rangers are equipped with an all-conference performer from last season in senior Kyle MacDonnell, who captured a spot on the All-Landmark Second Team after posting 22 goals and six assists to go with 36 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.

Five additional midfielders also return, including senior Nicholas Polacek, who posted 10 goals and six assists last season. Other returnees are junior Angelo Angione, sophomore Paul Le Pera, sophomore Henry Nawn, and junior Miles Savage while freshmen Aidan Duffy, Tommy Larmore, Kyle Weeks, and Zack Zachmann will provide additional depth.

Defensively, the Rangers return a pair of highly-experienced goalies, including senior Nate Sanders, who started every game last season and posted a .545 save percentage. Junior Michael McGeeney also returns after seeing significant playing time two years ago, when he played in 10 games and made four starts. Sophomore PJ Hoffman provides the Rangers with another option between the pipes.

On the back row, junior defenseman Jonny Bronander is coming off a strong campaign in which he led the team with 25 caused turnovers while finishing second with 58 ground balls. Junior Sam Smiley also returns after starting every game last season while sophomore Jack Tynan is back after a productive freshman campaign in which he totaled 36 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Sophomore Anthony Tufaro, a transplanted goalie, will also seek playing time along with freshmen Michael Campanella III and Branden Walsh.

At the X, Savage returns as the team's primary face-off specialist last season, when he won 48.3% of his attempts while picking up a team-leading 65 ground balls. Le Pera also brings experience as a FOGO.

The Rangers open their season on Saturday, when they visit Albright College in a non-conference game starting at 1 p.m. Drew's home opener is set for Feb. 22, when it takes on Neumann University at 1 p.m.
