MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's fencing team took on some of the best national-level opponents in the 92nd annual National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships, held this past Saturday in the Simon Forum.
The Rangers placed sixth overall (combined weapons) in a field that featured Division I opponents Temple University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Wagner University, as well as national-level powerhouses New York University, Johns Hopkins University,and Tufts University.
Lydia Segal was Drew's top performer in Foil.
Sophia McGee and
Grace McCarthy were top performers in epee while
Kayla Ogden registered the most wins in saber. All four fencers will be representing the Rangers at the NCAA Regional Championships at Duke University this coming weekend.
Segal was named to the NIWFA All-Academic Team for the third year in a row.
"We were pleased with the performance of our front-line starters," noted Drew Head Coach
Vincent Paragano. "However, we were most impressed with the clutch performances by our role players. Due to some injuries and other issues,
Emily Jones and
Olivia Yepez had to jump into starting roles in saber. They both turned in really eye-opening performances."
