**Over the next several weeks, we will take a look back at some of the top moments in Ranger athletics from the 2019-20 sports season, spotlighting a big team victory or outstanding individual performance for each of Drew's 20 varsity sports.**
In what could have been the final game of his career,Â
Riley Collins needed 19 points to become the Drew University men's basketball's program's all-time leading scorer this past March in the ECAC quarterfinals.
As it turned out, one game was more than enough to reach the milestone.
In one of the most electric performances of his decorated career, Collins
seized the record in style, scoring 31 points while draining a career-high nine 3-pointers to fuel a 95-71 victory over Hood College at Gwynedd-Mercy University. He surpassed the former program standard of 1,924 points that Drew Hall of Famer Dave Shaw C'93 held for 27 years.
Collins wasted no time in his quest, scoring 15 points on five 3-pointers in the opening half and helping the Rangers jump out to a 49-36 lead. He didn't score again until midway through the second half, but when he did he erupted for eight points on three straight possessions in a span of just 55 seconds. He buried a 3-pointer on a kick-out from freshman
Howard McBurnie, Jr. with 11:29 left to tie the record, putting his team up by 20.Â
Collins then claimed the record for himself 36 seconds later. Taking a lob pass from freshman
Michael Kane under the bucket, Collins dribbled out along the left baseline before tossing up a fadeaway jumper in front of the Ranger bench. For good measure, he drained a fast-break 3-pointer from beyond NBA range, prompting Head CoachÂ
Darryl Keckler to call a timeout for Collins to celebrate the momentous occasion with the rest of his teammates.
Collins would finish his career with 1,949 points, and in addition to his scoring record, he also left the Forest with all-time records for assists (476) and 3-pointers (277) while finishing second in steals (209). He racked up a plethora of postseason awards during his time in Madison and was a two-time Landmark Conference
Player of the Year and
two-time all-region selection from both the NABC and D3hoops.com. Collins led the Drew to its winningest season in program history in 2018-19 with 23 wins before guiding the Rangers to a 21-win campaign in 2019-20.
