**Over the last several weeks, we have been looking back at some of the top moments in Ranger athletics from the 2019-20 sports season, spotlighting a big team victory or outstanding individual performance for each of Drew's 20 varsity sports.**
The Drew University baseball team
defeated fifth-ranked Kean University in its second game of the season back on Feb. 18, highlighting the team's abbreviated but promising
2020 campaign.
The Rangers used some early offense and a stellar defensive performance to pick up a 3-1 victory over the Cougars, who were ranked No. 5 in the
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll and No. 11 in the
D3baseball.com preseason poll.Â
A trio of pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout for Drew, which defeated Kean for the first time since 1997. SeniorÂ
Jeff Serin spun five scoreless innings to pick up the win, firing nine strikeouts and yielding just one hit. SeniorÂ
Vinny Carlesi came on to pitch 3 2/3 innings and allowed just one run before sophomoreÂ
Teddy Hoxie recorded the final out with runners on base to pick up the save.
SeniorÂ
Jon Cocchio led Drew at the plate, going 2-for-4 while slugging a big two-run double that put the Rangers up 2-0 in the first inning. SophomoreÂ
Ryan Nagle also collected a pair of hits for Drew while classmateÂ
Shane Benson roped a double.
SeniorÂ
Max Felsenstein got things started for the Rangers, drawing a walk to lead off the game. SeniorÂ
Matthew Lange followed up with a single before juniorÂ
Cole Bosch moved the runners over with a groundout to first. Cocchio then went the opposite way, drilling a 1-2 pitch down the rightfield line for his big two-bagger that made it 2-0.
It was more than enough run support for Serin, who settled in after allowing two batters to reach in the first. He fanned the side in the second, then helped himself by picking a runner off first base in the third. Serin went on to retire seven of the last eight batters he faced before exiting after 88 pitches.
The Rangers tacked on their final run in the sixth. Bosch and Cocchio led off with back-to-back singles, and Bosch would eventually score on a groundout by seniorÂ
Anthony Tagliaferro.
Carlesi came on in the sixth and promptly worked three shutout innings. He started an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play in the sixth, then stranded a runner on first in each of his next two frames.
The Cougars rallied in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with two outs, and that's when Head CoachÂ
John Fugett summoned Hoxie out of the bullpen. Kean's No. 8 hitter broke up the shutout with an RBI-single, but Hoxie induced a game-ending groundout to third.Â
Serin's performance earned him the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week award and landed him on the
D3baseball.com Team of the Week.
After going 2-2 in February, the Rangers would post a 3-3 record during their Spring Break trip to Florida before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Â
