Rarely do future stars ask for a demotion, but Ares Michaelides began his collegiate career by asking to be sent down to the junior varsity soccer team so he could gain playing time. The experience paid off when he returned to the varsity the following year and went on to lead all scorers in each of the next three seasons. His 17 goals in the 1982 regular season ranked him third in Drew's record books, and he graduated with 33 total goals, then fifth in Drew history. A captain and team MVP in 1982, Michaelides went on to earn all-conference, all-New Jersey, and All-America honors after leading the Rangers to a national ranking and the 1982 championship of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro Area.

He nearly repeated that performance in baseball. This four-year letterman and eventual team captain played shortstop and second base, batting .385 for his career. As a sophomore he paced the Rangers in home runs and runs batted in, as Drew made its first-ever appearance in the E.C.A.C. Metro Area Tournament. He went on to be named to two all-conference teams, was selected as Drew's MVP in 1982, and graduated with the team's top fielding percentage. In all he did, he was noted for unselfish play.
