When Coach Vince Masco recruited David Shaw from Wallkill Valley Regional High School, he recognized a good athlete. He may not have realized that this Sussex County, New Jersey native would set a standard for Drew basketball players for years to come.

Shaw, the season scoring leader his last three years, was the top scorer by class for both his junior and senior years. At the time of his graduation, he owned Drew's all-time scoring record with 1,924 career points. He set 11 school basketball records in all, including marks for most three-point field goals in a career (225), highest career scoring average (19.8 points per game) and highest season scoring average (28.8 ppg), most free throws made in a career (387) and a season (169), highest career free throw percentage (.820), and single-season points (663). Ten years later, Shaw still held the single-season and career records for points and scoring average, as well as the single-season marks for free-throws attempted and made.

After finishing second in the nation in Division III in scoring as a junior, averaging 25.6 points per game, Shaw led the nation in his senior year, averaging 28.8 points per game. He was only the third player from New Jersey to win the national scoring title, and was the fourth highest scorer that year in all divisions. A Regional All-American in 1993, he was a MAC All-Star in 1991, 1992, and 1993 and an ECAC Metro NY/NJ All-Star in 1992 and 1993. He posted three 40-point games and 21 30-point or higher games in his career, with a career-high 43 points versus Moravian in 1992. He scored in double figures 68 times in three seasons. Not content with achievement in basketball, he played baseball in his senior year, and places 10th on Drew's all-time ERA list with 3.13. At graduation, Shaw was named the College Alumni/ae Association Senior Male Athlete of the Year.
