K.C. Havens occupies a special place in the hearts of the classmates, coaches, and fellow athletes who knew him at Drew.

One of the many soccer players recruited from West Hartford, Connecticut, K.C. achieved an enviable record in soccer and tennis, playing every game and match scheduled in both sports in four years. K.C., described by his soccer coach, John Reeves, as "one of the finest student athletes [he] ever associated with," was a "steady" soccer fullback who came through with a goal and an assist in each of four winning soccer seasons. The team went 8-3-2 in 1970, and in succeeding years posted records of 7-5-2, 11-3-1, and 12-2-2. He was named Honorable Mention All-Middle Atlantic Conference as a sophomore, and was selected to the All-Pa/ N.J/Del. Soccer Team in 1972 and again in 1973 when he received the All-State Soccer Award. Drew defeated King's College in 1972 to become National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District Champions. Another banner year was 1973, when Drew won the MAC Championship against Washington College, 7-1. K.C. was named to the All-MAC second team and the All-New Jersey second team, and was selected to the Soccer Coaches All-State first team and received an All-East Honorable Mention.

It was in tennis, however, that K.C. gained his most significant award: he and his doubles partner, Ken Sauter C'74, became the first Drew athletes to win a national championship in any sport by capturing the N.A.I.A.'s tennis doubles title. Sauter remembers K.C. as a highly skilled strategist, a thinking player who was fun to watch, and who achieved a solid record in singles as well as doubles. Although Drew's record in tennis varied over the four years, K.C. and Sauter were both recognized as exceptional players, shining when the team reached the MAC tournament semifinals in 1972 with K.C. as team captain, and 1973, and the N.A.I.A. finals in both years.
