Larry Horner is a legend around Drew. He played basketball for four seasons, helping the team accumulate a 37-19 record, and led the baseball team to a cumulative mark of 19-7 his junior and senior years. His senior year Larry was forced to switch hit due to a broken arm, yet he managed to hit a career-high .415. Known for his hitting power, this outfielder was responsible for the infamous "lost ball home run." Legend has it that one of Larry's home runs went so far that it rolled into the Drew Forest, where it remained lost for over half a century until, in 1996, some fans finally found the hidden treasure and returned it to its rightful owner.
After graduating from Drew in 1940, Larry spent five years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, before beginning a prestigious career in the advertising and marketing industry. Through the years, he has dedicated himself to the university, serving on innumerable committees, including the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee in which he was a founding member. Larry was instrumental in the creation of and fund-raiser for the Harry Simester Memorial Award. He has participated in phonathons, hosted alumni athletic meetings, served on committees to nominate alumni achievement award winners, and was the co-chair of the Northern New Jersey Capital Campaign for the Drew Dimension In 1989 the University honored Larry with the Alumni Service Award in recognition of his support and commitment.
