A superb floor leader who is poised and intelligent is how former Drew University's men's basketball coach, Charles Brock, described Matthew Kirnan. From 1978 through 1982, this "iron-man" appeared in all of Drew's 102 games, while starting the last 48 consecutively.
In his junior and senior seasons, Matt led the Rangers in scoring, assists, and steals. A two-year team captain, he won back-to-back team MVPs in 1981 and 1982 and was named First Team All IAC each year. In 1982, he was selected to the Rose City Classic All-Tournament Team and to the IAC All-Decade Team. Matt's 286 career assists ranks him fourth all-time at Drew.
A three-sport athlete, Matt also earned varsity letters in lacrosse and cross country. In his senior year, Matt served as the president of the Varsity D club, and his career culminated with selection as Drew's 1981-82 Male Athlete of the Year.
A true student-athlete who double-majored in economics and political science, he was selected as a Rose Memorial Scholar and a Garden State Scholar and was the recipient of the 1982 Samuel Kaplan Memorial Scholarship. Upon graduation, Matt received a postgraduate scholarship from the New Jersey Basketball Coaches and Writers Association, which he used in attending Seton Hall Law School.
