One of the most diversified students ever to grace the athletic facilities of Drew was Ray Stan. A stellar member of the baseball and basketball teams, Stan graduated cum laude as a history major and was elected to Sigma Phi in his senior year.
A four-year letter winner in both baseball and basketball, Stan earned team MVP honors in basketball in 1940-41 and posted a 7-0 record on the mound in 1940. The 1939 Oakleaves notes that the '39 baseball season (11-4) was built around the outstanding pitching of Ray Stan and Swede Backstrom (Hall of Fame '92). When he was not pitching, Stan was the sure-handed centerfielder. Moreover, as the center for the basketball team, he was described by The Acorn as the "ever firing spark plug of the team." In addition to his exploits on the court and diamond, Stan was heavily involved in other campus activities. He served as president of the student body, Faulkner House, and the Varsity Club.
He was also a member of the Extra-Curricular Activities and Social Committees.
