Season Preview: Men's Fencing

10/24/2025 5:00:00 PM

The Drew University men's fencing team returns a strong cast of returning talent under fourth-year Head Coach Joseph Zanko III.

The Rangers bring back 15 athletes from last year's squad that finished seventh at the MACFA Championships. Among that number are eight fencers who qualified for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Region Championships.

Eight Rangers will compete in epee this season, making it the squad's deepest unit. Two fencers will return to the weapon after reaching 40 wins last season, including senior Will Morton, a two-time regional qualifier who finished 43-22 last season. He has exceeded over 100 wins for his career.

Sophomore Lupo Sala is also back after a tremendous showing in which he joined the team for the second semester and promptly won 26 of his first 27 bouts before finishing 40-8 for the season.

A pair of additional regional qualifiers return for the epee squad in senior Gabriel Leone, who went 17-16 last season, and sophomore JP Emmert, who went 13-12.  Senior Eddie Matto (13-14) is also back as well as sophomores Nicholas Machado (8-6) and Jackson Howard (6-6). Freshman Ben Koyfman will also look to make his mark.

In foil, the Rangers bring back one of their most experienced and talented competitors in senior Henri Degremont. A two-time regional qualifier, he led all foilists in victories, finishing 41-21. A two-time MACFA medalis, 19th-place regional finisher and an Honorable Mention All-American in 2023, he has accumulated over 100 win for his career.

Sophomores Andrew Klyczek and Paul Greenleaf also return as regional qualifiers from last season. Klyczek recorded a 36-23 record while Greenleaf went 20-18. Senior Noah Gardos also returns after posting 36 wins over his first two seasons while sophomore Jason Sobon (8-6) is also back. Freshmen Nico Angelos and Nathaniel Ferrone will provide additional options at foil.

Sophomore Jason Ahlman returns to lead the sabre squad after posting a 41 wins a year ago while qualifying for the NCAA Regionals. Junior Logan Kleva is also back after a 21-season and an appearance at regionals. Sophomores Bryan Cipriano-Goines and Jack Henderson and freshman Nalby Varoqua will round out the sabre squad.

The Rangers open their season at Temple University's Nikki Franke Classic on Oct. 26 before hosting the Drew University on Nov. 1-2. Drew will host the MACFA Championships on March 1, and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Championships will be held on March 7 at a site to be determined.
