Drew women's basketball survived an ugly game against CSI to improve to 7-0 for the first time in school history. The Rangers got 17 points from senior Jessica DelVecchio and a clutch three from Brenda Kramer in the final seconds to hold off the Dolphins' charge, 57-50. Kramer drilled a three as the shot clock expired with 13 seconds left in the game to make a three point lead six and secure the seventh straight victory for Drew. Danielle McLaughlin had 12 points to lead CSI (2-5).
The Rangers ended the low scoring first half up by three thanks to DelVecchio's long ball with six seconds remaining, 23-20. Neither team led by more than four points and there were five ties in the evenly played period. Drew hit just 30% from the field and 3-15 from behind the arc. Fortunately for the Rangers, the Dolphins were worse at 20% and 1-8 from three.
Drew quickly built a ten point lead in the second half. Jumpers from Danielle Barber, Eden Blazovic and DelVecchio helped give the Rangers a 30-20 advantage. Three pointers from Dolphins Kristen Panariello and Allie Shanahan cut the lead to four before Drew was again able to reach double digits. A three point play from Barber made it 35-28 with 12:35 left and Kramer's layup off DelVecchio's feed made it nine. Blazovic turned in Kramer's assists for an 11 points lead, 39-28, with 11:16 left.
Drew maintained that hefty lead into the final five minutes of play when CSI mounted a comeback. Drew was limited to just a pair of free throws from DelVecchio while the Dolphins were able to cut the lead to six on Denise Zajonc's three pointer with 2:18 left. Another three, this time by McLaughlin with 1:35 left, cut the Ranger lead to just three points.
On the next possession, DelVecchio found Jessica Reid for a layup and a five point edge. With 45 seconds remaining Panariello's bucket brought the Dolphins to within one possession, but they needed a stop at the defensive end. It appeared that they would get that stop as the Rangers were forced to inbound with just two seconds left on the shot clock. Barber found Kramer cutting to a spot behind the three point line and for the second straight game the first-year guard hit a critical triple as the buzzer went off. Armed with a six point lead the Rangers were secure. Barber grabbed a defensive rebound and then hit a foul shot for the 57-50 final.
It was not the Rangers' prettiest game of the season as they shot just 37% for the contest, though 13-29 in the second half. Still the Rangers forced 21 turnovers and outrebounded the Dolphins 52-45. Barber had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Eden Blazovic had just five points, but grabbed a career high ten boards and had three blocked shots. Reid had a solid game with eight points, seven boards and three steals in 30 minutes of play. Kramer had the Rangers' only bench points with nine. McLaughlin was the only Dolphin in double figures with 12 points.
Drew will look to go 8-0 on Saturday when it hosts Baptist Bible at 2 pm.
