Mistakes Doom Rangers at Goucher, 56-50

Turnovers doomed the Rangers as a 13-0 Goucher run in the second half sent Drew to its third straight Landmark Conference defeat, 56-50, in Towson, Md.  The Rangers led by six with under ten minutes remaining in the game before the host Gophers reeled off a game changing run over the next four minutes of play.  Danielle Barber led the Rangers with 12 points while Victoria Ault had 11 off the bench for Drew (9-4, 1-3).  Elizabeth Von Ende led all scorers with 13 points for the Gophers.

A sloppy first half ended with the teams tied at 23-23.  Drew shot 33.3% from the field in the first half while Goucher hit just 23.5%, but the Rangers committed 18 turnovers in the period as well.  The Rangers led by six early in the game after Jessica DelVecchio hit three straight free throws to make it 14-8.  The Gophers would tie the game at 16-16 on Allie Russo's layup with 7:45 left and, eventually, take a five point lead on Leia Roberts-Brown's jumper with 2:30 to play.  Drew finished the half on a 5-0 run to tie it at 23-23 thanks to a three point play by Danielle Barber and a jumper from DelVecchio off Whitney Mackay's assist.

The Rangers controlled the first ten minutes of the second half.  Ault scored six straight points to cap an 8-0 run that put Drew up 31-26.  After two free throws by Kiara Doughty, Barber hit a three to give Drew a six point lead.  The Gophers tied it up on back to back threes, but Drew built another six point lead by the 9:55 mark thanks to Eden Blazovic's layup off Jessica Reid nice feed.  That 42-36 scoreline would prove the peak for the Rangers in the game.  Drew had been surviving the Gopher defensive pressure, but over the next four minutes the Rangers would come undone.  The Rangers made eight turnovers over the next four minutes as the Gophers, and von Ende, in particular, reeled off 13 consecutive points to put the hosts up 49-42.

The lead would reach eight on a von Ende three, 52-44, before Drew clawed its way back into the game.  Barber hit a jumper and then stole the ball on the ensuing inbound to find Mackay for a jumper.  With 1:09 left to play Ault got fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and hit one to make it 52-49.  Drew got the rebound off Ault's miss, but couldn't convert the extra opportunity into points.  The Rangers had the ball again with the score the same and 37 seconds left to play, but again couldn't get a jumper to fall.  At the other end Kiara Doughty's layup put Goucher up by five with 20 seconds left.

A crazy end to the game saw the Rangers get a few more chances to pull out the miracle, but to no avail.  After Barber missed a three that would have made it a two point game, Amber Smith had two free throws; Smith missed both and Doughty grabbed the offensive rebound and called timeout, but the Gophers had none.  Drew was given two free throws, but DelVecchio hit just one of the two.  On the ensuing inbound, Drew caused a turnover, but again couldn't get the three pointer to drop with three seconds left.  This time the Gophers hit both for the 56-50 final tally.

The loss is Drew's fourth straight and third straight in the Landmark Conference.  Goucher improves to 5-9, 1-3 in the conference.  Drew committed 35 turnovers in the game and hit just 2-12 from behind the arc.  The Gophers were 6-14 from three point range, one of the keys to their win.  Ault had a season high 11 in the loss as well as two rebounds and two steals.

The Rangers don't have much time to worry about the loss as they get back into action tomorrow at 2 pm at Catholic.
