The Drew Rangers broke a four game skid and improved their record to 11-8 while the Jersey City Gothic Knights fell to 5-15 on the year. The Rangers spread their offense around and saw four players reach double digits in scoring.
Danielle Barber, Jessica Del Vecchio, and
Brenda Kramer each had 12 points for the Rangers. Kat Luby added 10 of her own to help the Rangers pick up their ninth non-conference victory this season. For the Gothic Knights, Ebony Cunningham led the team in scoring for the 12th time this season with 22 points.
The first half was back and fourth through the first ten minutes. The Rangers started to pull away a little bit with a
Danielle Barber three-pointer that put them up 21-18, with 8:02 remaining in the half. Two more three's from Del Vecchio and Dana Cornato, gave Drew a ten-point lead up which they held up until the five minute mark. The Knights fought back though, and scored a quick ten points to bring them within one. Miesha Cook drained two three's in the Gothic Knights run but Drew's
Brenda Kramer converted a classic three-point play that helped the Rangers take a 36-30 lead into the half.
The Rangers took advantage of a cold shooting start to the second half by the Gothic Knights and were up by 20 points by the time Cunningham scored their first points of the half at 13:01. The Rangers held onto their lead until the Gothic Knights started to press with 7:13 left on the clock. NJCU took advantage of some wild shooting and after a Drew turnover, Cunningham drilled a three, they were within 10. The Gothic Knights would come as close as six behind back-to-back layups from Cunningham and Latifah Johnson. The Knight's pressing defense caused the Rangers to turn the ball over five times in the final 3:00. Somehow through double and even triple team defense, the Rangers put together two nice baskets from Kramer and Ault, in the paint for the 68-58 win.
For the Gothic Knights, Johnson had 10 points and Lindia Fischer was 6-12 from the field good for 13. NJCU travels to Rutgers-Newark this Saturday at 6pm. The Rangers will be on the road all weekend taking on the Juniata Eagles Friday 2/5, at 5:30pm and the Susquehanna Crusaders the following day at 2:00pm.
