Mateo’s Double-Double Leads Drew to First Win

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (November 20, 2012) – Senior Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) notched her first career double-double this evening in a 77-53 victory over Centenary College (0-4) in Baldwin Gym. The victory improves women's basketball to 1-2 on the season.

Mateo scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and distributed the ball brilliantly. Her game-high 11 assists are tied for the third most ever by a Drew women's basketball player in one game. Freshman Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.  Senior Whitney Mackay (Suffield, Conn./Berkshire) rounded of the Drew double-figure scoring by adding 12 points and pulled down  career-high 14 rebounds.

Cyclone leading scorer Melissa Kukoda and Heather Russell paced the Centenary attack with a combined 27 points. The Cyclones as a team struggled from the floor, shooting just 23 percent from the field and made only two of their 15 3-point attempts.

The Rangers, who scored 77 points in the first two games combined, matched their season total with a season-high 77 points tonight. The Rangers only trailed once the entire night in the early going. After the two teams exchanged buckets in the opening minutes, Drew finished off a 16-5 run on a Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) layup with 11:47 to play in the first half.

Drew took a 34-24 lead into halftime and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the contest. The Rangers shot a blistering 52 percent from the floor in the second half and 48 percent for the game. Drew held a slight rebounding edge for the game and had a season-high seven blocks as a team.

The Rangers will finish off their week on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Hartwick College for a non-conference tilt against the Hawks. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Oneonta, N.Y.
