Box Score MADISON, N.J. (December 1, 2012) – Coming off a dominating performance in their victory on Wednesday, the Drew Women's Basketball team (2-4, Landmark 0-1) fell to the undefeated Catholic Cardinals (6-0, Landmark 1-0) 66-49 in the opening game of Landmark Conference play this season.
A deep Cardinals roster was led by Katarina Owunna, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jill Woerner also had the hot hand for Catholic as she a team-high 16 points in the victory.
For the Rangers senior
Whitney Mackay (Shuffield, Conn./Berkshire) had a big game, notching a career-high 19 points in addition to 11 rebounds, for her second double-double on the season. Drew also received strong contributions from senior
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) and freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) who each scored 11 points.
After Drew scored the first basket of the game, Catholic did not give up the lead the rest of the game and took a 27-16 lead into the half. However, the Rangers made a strong run at a comeback in the early minutes of the second half. At the 15:34 mark the Rangers, sparked by five straight points by Mackay, cut the Cardinals lead to only two points. Despite the furious comeback, the Cardinals pulled away in the closing minutes of the game, going on a 15-6 run of their own that essentially locked up the victory.
The Rangers continued their success at the charity stripe, going 17-23 and shooting 73.9 percent in the contest.
The women's basketball team will next be in action on Monday evening, as they will welcome an unbeaten Vassar College (4-0) to Baldwin Gymnasium with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
