Box Score MADISON, N.J. (December 5, 2012) – Led by Leigh-Ann Lively's 20 points, Fairleigh Dickinson (6-1) defeated Drew (2-6) this evening, 65-41 in the annual “Battle of Madison Ave”.
The Devils never trailed in the contest and began the game with a 21-8 run over the first 11:30 of play. A scoring lull beginning at the 8:03 mark didn't see either team net a point for nearly five minutes until Rachel Groom of FDU knocked down a free throw with 3:30 remaining in the frame. The free throw sparked an 8-4 run to close the half as the Devils took a 30-14 advantage into halftime.
Fairleigh Dickinson did not relinquish the double digit lead for the remainder of the game and did not allow the Rangers to pull within 16 points in the second half. The Devils outscored the Rangers 35-27 in the final 20 minutes and went 20-for-26 from the free throw line for the game.
Freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) fell a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring a team-high 13 points. Senior
Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City), who came into the game ranked 15
th in the country in assists, dished off a game-high seven to spark the Drew offense. She is now tied for ninth all-time with Courtney Cunningham at 225 career assists.
A trio of players, led by Lively, paced the Devil offense. Kyra Dayon recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Rachel Groom rounded out the Fairleigh Dickinson scoring with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
In the Rangers six losses this season, their opponents have combined overall record of 28-7 on the season to date. The all-time series between the Rangers and the Devils is now tied at 12.
The Rangers will return to action next Sunday on the road against Montclair State.
