Mateo Moves Up on All-Time Assist List in Ranger Loss

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (January 16, 2013) – Senior Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) moved into sole possession of eighth place all-time on the school's career assist list this evening in a 63-44 loss to Scranton (12-4, 4-1 Landmark) in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers drop to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in Landmark Conference play.

Mateo needed three assists to surpass Melissa Kraft C'07 on the school's all-time assist list and she recorded a team-high four dishes to go along with 11 points. She now has 272 career assists and trails Eileen Herr C'03 by 14 for seventh all-time.

The Royals were led by Meredith Mesaris who scored a game-high 18 points, with 14 coming in the first half of play. Erin Boggan chipped in 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting to pace the Scranton offense.

Scranton got off to a quick start and opened the game up on a 14-2 run.  The Royals led by as many as 14 over the first 18 minutes of play. Drew strung together consecutive baskets by Mateo and Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School) to narrow the gap to 10 points with 1:23 remaining in the first half. Coming out of a timeout, the Royals nailed back-to-back three's and took a 36-20 lead into halftime.

The Royals were able to seal the game early in the second half, never relinquishing a lead below 15 points. A 10-0 run beginning at the 13:37 mark in the second half, put Scranton up 54-31 creating an insurmountable margin for the Rangers. Drew struggled from the field in the second half, shooting just 26 percent and shot 30 percent from the field for the game.

The Rangers committed 22 turnovers compared to 18 by the Royals and were outrebounded 48-36. Senior Whitney Mackay (Suffield, Conn./Berkshire School), Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) and Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) each had nine points in a balanced Drew attack.

The Rangers will hit the road this weekend and travel to Towson, Md. for a matchup against Goucher College.  The women will be the first part of a women's/men's doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
