Rangers Top Gordon in Non-Conference Tilt

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (January 2, 2013) – The Drew women's basketball team improved to 4-8 on the season after a 59-52 victory over Gordon College (2-8) this afternoon. The Rangers handed the Fighting Scots their eighth-straight loss.

A trio Rangers were in double figures led by freshman Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) who had 16 points and six rebounds. Classmate Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) chipped in 11 points while senior Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) tallied 14 points and a game-high six assists.

Gordon was not able to keep up despite a pair of 20-point efforts. Sophomore Brooke Kratche led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Junior Lauren Kranyak recorded a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The duo was responsible for the only two3-pointers recorded by the Fighting Scots.

The contest saw a total of 10 lead changes and six ties but it was the Rangers who were able to hang on over the final 10 minutes of the game. The last lead of the game for Gordon came on a layup by Kranyak with 11:48 left in the game. The Rangers tied the game up on the next possession on a fast break layup by Mateo to knot the game at 43.

The Rangers did not trail for the remainder of the contest and opened up with their largest lead of the game on the final free throw by Mateo in the closing seconds. Drew struggled from the free throw line, canning 11-of-20 attempts. The Fighting Scots missed only four of their 18 tries from the charity stripe and held a 36-34 advantage in rebounding.

Drew will play its first Landmark Conference game of the New Year on Saturday when they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna. The tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
