Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. (January 23, 2013) – The Drew women's basketball team improved to 3-4 in the Landmark Conference after a 57-42 win over Merchant Marine (7-9, 1-7 Landmark) this evening. The Rangers are now 7-11 overall and are now one game out of the fourth place.
Freshman
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) led the way for the Rangers for the fourth time in five games with a game-high 15 points. Stephens recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore
Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School) was part of a stellar effort from the free-throw line by sinking 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. As a team the Rangers were 20-25 from line.
The Mariners got two outstanding rebounding efforts from Rebecca Resor and Kristina Walz. Resor pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with 10 points while Walz grabbed 11 boards, scoring seven points.
Merchant Marine took its largest lead of the game, 10-6 with 13:41 left in the first half. The Rangers responded by scoring the next 10 points with four coming from
Becky Smith (Haverhill, Mass./Presentation of Mary Academy). Smith logged 24 minutes for the Rangers and established a new career-high with six blocks. The Rangers did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game and took a 31-23 into halftime.
The second half proved to be all Rangers as they extended their lead to a much as 17 with 7:37 remaining in the contest. Stephens notched 10 of her 13 rebounds in the second half and she teamed up with Wilson going 7-of-10 from the free throw line.
For the game, the Rangers forced 20 Merchant Marine turnovers but lost the rebounding battle 49-44.
The Rangers will return to Baldwin Gym on Saturday to take on Susquehanna at 2:00 p.m. Drew topped the Crusaders 62-52 in overtime back on January 5
th.
