Box Score Madison, N.J. (January 25, 2014) – The Drew University women's basketball (10-7, 3-3) picked up its tenth win of the season defeating Goucher College (5-11, 1-5), 71-60 this evening in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers never trailed in the home victory.
Junior guard
Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School (Mass.)) led Drew recording her second double-double of the season. Wilson scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, playing all 40 minutes for the Rangers. Sophomore
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) scored 16 points and tallied eight rebounds for Drew in the victory.
The Rangers started the game strong behind the play of Wilson and Stephens who combined 10 of the teams first 15 points. Drew controlled the middle portion of the first half and held a 32-18 advantage with 6:04 remaining. Goucher answered with a 10-2 run to close the half. Drew took a 34-28 lead into halftime.
Amaka Ezeani made three early layups in the second half for the Gophers to reduce the deficit to 36-34.
Sharnell Huff sank a jump shot with 15:35 left to pull Goucher within one at 41-40. The Ranger attack would prove too strong for the Gophers, as Drew controlled the middle part of the frame again. A layup from senior
Brianna Reich (Sea Bright, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) gave Drew
its largest lead at 60-45 with just over seven minutes to play.
The Gophers fought back once again, as a Huff jumper capped off a 15-5 stretch and made it 65-60 Rangers with 2:10 remaining. Goucher would not score again as Drew would close the game on at the charity stripe, making six of their final seven attempts.
Freshman guard
Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) added nine points for the Rangers in the victory. Sophomore
Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) scored eight points and recorded two block in 23 minutes off the bench for the Rangers.
Drew continues play with a game on Wednesday January 29, as they host Merchant Marine in a Landmark Conference contest.
