Box Score Madison, N.J. (January 29, 2014) – The Drew University women's basketball team (11-7, 4-3) picked up another Landmark Conference victory tonight as they defeat the United States Merchant Marine Academy (4-12, 0-7), 47-32 in Baldwin Gym.
Junior guard
Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School (Mass.)) led the Rangers in scoring for the third consecutive game. Wilson played all 40 minutes for Drew, scoring 13 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Senior
Logan Cavanaugh (Rutland, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the Ranger victory.
For the second straight game the Rangers led every second of the way. Drew started the scoring just eight seconds into the game on a lay-up from Wilson off a feed from Cavanaugh. The Rangers opened up a 12-0 lead with 14:56 left to play in the first half. Merchant Marine would battle back outscoring the Rangers 21-15 over the final 14 minutes of the first half. Drew took a 27-21 lead in the break.
The Ranger shooters continued their streak opening the half on a 9-2, taking a 36-23 lead with just over nine minutes left to play. Merchant Marine would cut the Ranger lead to 10, but would get no closer. Drew closed out the game on the free-throw line making five of their final seven attempts.
The Mariners were led by their leading scorer, Demi Vanderwal. Vanderwal scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss. Kelsey Hofmann added 10 points for the Mariners.
Sophomore
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) and Freshman
Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) combined for 14 points and 22 rebounds for Drew in the victory.
Drew returns to action on Saturday February 1, in Selinsgrove, Pa. as they take on Susquehanna in another Landmark Conference contest.
