Big Runs Help Lift Royals Past Rangers

Box Score Madison, N.J. (February 12, 2014) – The Drew women's basketball team (11-11, 4-7) suffered a conference loss this evening to Scranton (19-3, 10-1), 77-47 in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers are 4-7 in conference play and are fifth in the conference standings.

Junior guard Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire School (Mass.)) led Drew in scoring with nine points playing all 40 minutes of the game. Wilson also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out 10 assists for the Rangers. Freshman Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) added eight points in her 20th start of the season.

The Rangers kept the game close in the opening minutes, answering every made Scranton shot with one of their own and trailed 10-8, with 12:39 left to play in the first half. Scranton closed the half on a 31-13 run, taking a 41-21 lead into the halftime break.

Big runs were the trend of the game for the Royals as the second half was more of the same as the Royals used a 10-2 run to push the lead to 60-30. The spurt was capped by a three-point play from freshman forward Alexix Roman, who finished the game with seven points. The Rangers cut the Royals lead to 27 at the 8:46 mark trailing, 62-35.

Scranton was led by conference leading scorer Meredith Mesaris who scored 21 points, shooting 9-16 from the field. Sarah Payonk joined Mesaris as the only Royals in double-figures scoring 16 points in 25 minutes of action.

Sophomore Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench for the Rangers. Freshman Courtney Trzasko (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) added six points in 11 minutes for Drew in the loss.

Still alive in the playoff hunt, the Rangers face conference foe Goucher on Saturday February 15 in Baltimore, Md at 4:00 p.m. Drew defeated the Gophers 71-60 in their first meeting of the season.
