Box Score Towson, Md. (February 15, 2014) – The Drew University women's basketball team (12-11, 5-7) defeated Goucher College (6-15, 2-9), 68-66 in double overtime this evening in Towson, Md. At 5-7 in league play, Drew sits in a three-way tie for fouth place, the final spot for the conference playoffs.
The Rangers were led by junior guard
Breana Wilson (Irvington,
N.J./Berkshire School (Mass.)) who scored 17 points. In 50 minutes of action Wilson added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman
Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Rangers in the victory.
The two teams traded baskets for the first three minutes and were tied 6-6 with 17 minutes left to play in the first half. Over the next four minutes Goucher opened a five point lead, 11-6 with 13:59 left in the half. The Gophers outscored Drew 20-19 in the final 13 minutes of the half taking a 31-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. Miller led the Rangers with seven points at the half.
Goucher continued their hot shooting to start the second half taking a 37-25 lead with 16:50 left to play in the game. The Rangers countered with a 10-2 run of their own cutting the Gopher advantage to just five with 13:18 left in the game. With 8:09 left to play the Gophers opened their largest lead of the game 52-38. Over the final eight minute stretch the Rangers put together a 15-1 run tying the game 53-53 at the end of the half. Miller scored the final four points of the game to send the teams to overtime.
Seniors
Logan Cavanaugh (Rutland, Vt./Burr And Burlington) and
Brianna Reich (Sea Bright, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) combined to score the first four points of the overtime period giving Drew a 57-53 lead with 3:02 left to play. The Gophers answered scoring the next four points tying the game 57-57 with just 1:44 to go in the game. Sophomore
Courtney Stephens (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) scored the go-ahead lay-up with 1:26 to play giving the Rangers a 59-57 advantage. After three free-throws from Wilson, the Gophers hit a three-pointer to tie the game again, 62-62 at the end of the first overtime period.
Stephens dominated the second overtime period scoring four of the Rangers six points. With 1:43 left to play Stephens sank two free throws, giving Drew a 68-66 lead. She finished the game with eight points and 14 rebounds.
Amaka Ezeani led the Gophers with 26 points and 17 rebounds. The Goucher center recorded her third double-double of the season. Sharnell Huff added 21 points for Goucher.
Cavanaugh finished the game with a season-high 12 points. The senior forward also grabbed eight rebounds and recorded five blocks for Drew. Sophomore
Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) scored 13 points in 16 minutes of the bench for the Rangers in the victory.
The Rangers look to keep conference playoff hopes alive as they travel to Long Island on Wednesday February 19 for a rematch with Merchant Marine. Drew defeated the Mariners, 47-32 in their first meeting. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
