MADISON, N.J. (Jan. 10, 2015) – What began as a step-for-step, evenly matched clash between Landmark Conference members The Catholic University of America and the Drew University women's basketball teams, ended in a decisive victory for Catholic despite a career-high 28 points from Drew sophomore guard
Hannah Miller on Saturday.
Miller's personal achievement came on 11-of-18 field shooting and five three-point baskets on nine tries. The Drew shooting guard reeled in nine rebounds as well, distinguishing herself as both the statistical and intangible leader of the Rangers.
With Miller as the main contributor, senior guard
Breana Wilson earned best supporting role with nine assists and 18 points. She too drained five treys on nine tries.
With the two guards leading the charge, the Ranger squad (7-7, 2-4) began the game with lights out shooting in the first half. The effort helped quickly erase a brief 4-0 Catholic (11-4, 5-1) lead to begin the game. Miller sparked a 16-2 Rangers run with back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 6-6 as Drew methodically built an early lead with some sharpshooting by the Rangers' backcourt.
The Rangers surged into the half in control defensively using sleight of hand steals to grab easy buckets and enter halftime leading 41-37.
Drew picked up right where it left off following the second half inbound. They expanded and started a pattern that began with a sophomore guard
Courtney Trzasko three ball. Miller got the hint and drained a couple of her own. The Rangers had exploded into a six-point lead.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, Catholic was draining threes with similar efficiency, among other things. They attained a lead with 13 minutes of basketball remaining. Using an attack complete with deep twos and nifty post work, the Cardinals opened up an even larger lead. Their forwards possessed the neat ability to spin around Drew's flat-footed defensive attempts, creating simple two-point buckets.
In the blink of an eye the Cards had opened up an ultimately victory clinching eight point lead. Despite valiant efforts to even the score, the Rangers ultimately fell victim to their inability to sink the three they executed with such ease in the first half. The group would finish with a 44% three-point clip. But the missed ones came when they needed them most.
The final score did not accurately portray how close the contest was. The equality in play is evidenced in identical 46.4 field goal percentages for either team. There was however a legitimate discrepancy in second chance points, a category lead by Catholic 17-to-6.
The Rangers have lost their fourth straight Landmark Conference game but have plenty of time to make up the difference. Drew will take on Elizabethtown College in the inaugural Landmark Conference game between the two schools. The tilt is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip and will take place on Wednesday, Jan 14 in Baldwin Gymnasium.
