SCRANTON, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2015) – The Drew University women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 13 The University of Scranton, 72-43, in a Landmark Conference contest on Wednesday evening.
Â
Senior guard
Breana Wilson and sophomore guard
Hannah Miller each contributed 10 points and two assists, while junior forward
Courtney Stephens scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds while making 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The loss drops the Rangers to 10-9 overall and 4-6 in the Landmark Conference.
Â
The nationally ranked Royals (17-2, 9-1) used a 44-24 rebounding discrepancy to their advantage and shot 46 percent from the field as a team to hold onto first place in the Landmark Conference. The victory was further aided by an 11-of-13 mark from the charity stripe and committing just 10 turnovers.
Â
Sophomore guard
Courtney Trzasko hit two free throws to tie the game at 2-2 early on before Scranton went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead five minutes into the game. A Hanna Miller three-pointer halted the run, but her trey preempted another scoring spurt by the Royals, this one a 7-0 run to take an 18-5 lead.
Â
Scranton's lead would stretch to 18 points midway through the first half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Miller and Wilson cut the lead to 24-12. The Rangers and Royals proceeded to trade baskets until the 6:46 mark, when Scranton went on a 13-0 run. Two Stephens free throws closed the Drew scoring for the half and the Royals went to the locker room with a 42-18 lead.
Â
Stephens worked hard to keep the Rangers in the game, driving into the paint and drawing fouls. However, a 7-0 Scranton run gave the home squad its largest lead of the game at 65-33 with 6:26 to play.
Â
A pair of Drew freshmen shined down the stretch, scoring the Rangers' final eight points.
Michaela Keegan hit a free throw and two jumpers, while
Haley Scheuer nailed a triple during the final few possessions of the contest.
Â
Drew returns to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2:00 p.m. when the Rangers visit Juniata College for their second and final matchup of the 2014-15 season.
