MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 13, 2015) – The Drew University women's basketball team (1-0) kicked off the Rose City Tip-Off Classic and the 2015-16 season with a 84-50 victory over Penn St. – Lehigh Valley (0-1) on Friday evening.
The Game One victory came with help from junior guard
Sam Lane in her first game as a Ranger. Lane's rampant scoring came mostly by way of the 3-pointer. She notched eight such shots on 14 attempts, with 28 total points. Her performance from behind the arc was good for second all-time for the single-game statistic. No Ranger had made eight 3-pointers in a game since 2006.
Junior forward
Ryan Jackson entered the new season expanding upon an already established facet of her game. Jackson tore down 13 rebounds, a career high, while also adding seven points. Junior guard
Hannah Miller finished second in scoring on the night. Miller notched 17 points, and added eight rebounds. Senior forward
Courtney Stephens shot an economical 5-of-7 from the field, contributing 11 points.
The Rangers spread the ball around evenly, using coordination to score baskets. 25 of their goals came following an assist, while only one did for the Lions.
Lane drilled three 3-pointers to get the Rangers, and her Drew career off to a hot start. Led by Lane, Drew began the game on an 18-1 run. Stephens pitched in a couple of two-pointers to help the team explode into a more than comfortable lead. As the half went on, Jackson kept the ball in the Rangers' hands, logging nine defensive rebounds in the first half. The Rangers wouldn't relinquish the lead once in the contest.
With that, the Rangers' season is officially underway. On Saturday, The Rangers square off against the winner of the St. Lawrence vs. Misericordia game in the championship. The final is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
