KINGS POINT, N.Y. (December 2, 2015) – In a road victory that saw nine Rangers score baskets, the Drew University women's basketball team took its first Landmark Conference contest, 60-45, over The United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday night.
Senior forward
Courtney Stephens, junior guard
Hannah Miller, and junior forward
Ryan Jackson combined for 34 points in the victory. Stephens and Jackson posted 16 rebounds as a pair, as well. Sophomore guard
Michaela Keegan pitched in five assists and five points.
The Rangers dominated the opening period of play, the first nine minutes of which were spent working on a 13-1 run that saw five different players score.
Junior forward
Sam Lane got the second period going with a 3-pointer and Jackson pitched in a pair of two-pointers. Drew expanded its lead to 20-7 with seven minutes to go in the second period. An 8-0 run featuring two Miller 3-pointers got them to 28-7 with four minutes to play. The Rangers monitored the tempo and had the Mariners forcing adjustments to adapt to Drew's style of play.
By halftime, seven different Rangers had scored with Miller leading the charge with eight points. Keegan played the role of floor general, distributing four first half assists. The Rangers had exactly twice as many points as the Mariners, as the teams turned in a 32-16 halftime score.
Jackson broke up a Mariner run to close the third period with a two-point bucket. The basket brought it to 44-31 as the third period ended.
Stephens and Miller alternated baskets throughout the final period, and junior forward
Courtney Trzasko drained a three for the final basket of the game.
Drew shot at an efficient 40-percent while they held USMMA to just a 26-percent clip. The Rangers also pulled down seven more defensive rebounds than the Mariners. Ball distribution was clearly much more valued for the Rangers as they assisted on 20 baskets to Merchant Marine's four.
Another Landmark Conference tilt awaits the Rangers and this time they'll be at home. Drew squares off against Goucher College on Saturday, Dec. 5 with a 4:00 p.m. tip.
