MADISON, N.J. (Feb. 11, 2015) – The Drew University women's basketball team fell in a Landmark Conference contest to Moravian College by a score of 84-62 on Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gymnasium.
Junior forward
Courtney Stephens dropped 17 points and collected nine rebounds. Senior guard
Breana Wilson pitched in 14 and sophomore forward
Ryan Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds, a career-high.
The night's contest was a "pink game" held in accordance with the "Play4Kay" initiative to battle breast cancer and other women's cancers. The teams sported pink warmup gear in recognition of the cause pioneered by Kay Yow, a North Carolina women's head coach who created the fund before her passing in 2009. With the exception of whistles and socks, the pink gear was shed and the conference contest began.
The Rangers (11-12, 5-9) began attacking the rim with force. They threw crisp and long passes off defensive rebounds and finished strong. Stephens streaked down the court after a Moravian (12-10, 8-5) turnover, howling for the ball. She then, on the ensuing fast break reeled in a football pass with one hand and sunk the two pointer, and the and-one basket. The play brought the score to 17-14 in favor of Drew with 11 minutes to go in the half.
As the half continued on, the Greyhounds exploited the size difference that existed in the paint. Their bigs penetrated and began converted inside two-pointers. The attack was relentless and drew the Rangers' defenders closer and closer towards the rim. At which point Moravian converted from 3-point range.
The Greyhounds exploded into a run that brought the score to 41-28 at halftime.
Drew continued to attempt inside drives but were consistently turned away as the half began. Moravian, however scored from inside frequently, using their bodies to clear paths to the rim. They allowed themselves the leeway to attempt three-pointers because when they didn't fall, their forwards were there to clean up rebounds.
Wilson tried her hand at sparking a comeback, going on a personal 7-0 run complete with a couple of fast break lay-ins and a three. The score stood at 55-42 in favor of Moravian with 13 minutes to play.
The Greyhounds stymied most Ranger attempts at a comeback with fast-acting steals and back door cuts on offense. The score stood at 64-48 with 10 minutes to go.
The Greyhounds maintained their lead with little resistance as the contest wound to a close.
The Rangers final home game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2:00 p.m. as they face Susquehanna University. Drew will celebrate the career of Wilson this Saturday for Senior Day.
