CAPE CORAL, Fla. (March 11, 2015) – The Drew University softball team will head back North with a 3-7 record after splitting a doubleheader on its final day at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, outlasting Wilmington College 2-1 in eight innings before falling to No. 14 Montclair State University 8-0 in five.
Â
Sophomore starting pitcher
Emma Agostini won the pitchers' duel against Wilmington by tossing all eight innings and allowing six hits, a walk and just one run. The run was unearned, scored by the Quakers in the top of the eighth as the International Tiebreaker (ITB) rule was enforced following a scoreless seven innings of softball. Agostini would also go 2-for-4 at the plate to continue her hot hitting streak.
Â
After the Quakers (2-5) broke the scoreless tie in first extra frame, sophomore right fielder
Phylicia Pellot made sure the Rangers would either extend or win the contest by lacing a double to the right-center field gap and driving home the ITB runner. With the score tied 1-1, freshman center fielder
Heather Ronchi recorded the second of four straight hits for Drew in the eighth as Pellot advanced to third with just one out. Agostini followed with a slow-rolled single to the pitcher with no advance by the Rangers' baserunners. Senior catcher
Kate McNamara came up with the bases loaded, needing one swing to hand Drew the win. McNamara placed an infield single where no Quaker could pick it up, allowing Pellot to scurry home for the game-winning run.
Â
Pellot was 2-for-4 in the extra-inning victory, while freshman second baseman
Danielle Martinez and senior first baseman
Laura D'Ornellas each contributed to the Rangers' nine-hit attack with a base knock apiece. Freshman designated player
Kira Scarangella also picked up a hit, the first of her collegiate career, which was tagged to center field in the seventh inning.
Â
The Rangers' Spring Break excursion concluded with an 8-0 loss in a five-inning game against the nationally ranked Red Hawks of Montclair State.
