PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 1, 2015) – Despite outhitting their opponent in Game 1, and having every Ranger reach base in Game 2, the Drew University softball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader 2-0 and 9-3 on a Wednesday afternoon on Long Island.
Six Rangers (3-14) tallied at least one hit in the first contest including freshman second baseman
Danielle Martinez who reached base in all three trips to the plate, turning in a 2-for-3 day out of the eight spot in the lineup.
Sophomore right fielder
Phylicia Pellot provided productivity out of the leadoff slot, reaching base three times on two walks and a seventh inning single. Pellot led off each inning she batted in.
The lone extra-base hit came off the bat of freshman left fielder
Brooke Adams who's double in the left-field gap put two runners in scoring position with nobody out in the top of the 7
th. Ranger rally would stall there, however, as the St. Joseph's (5-6) starter retired Drew's next three, finalizing her complete game.
Drew's starter, sophomore
Emma Agostini, turned in seven innings of six-hit ball. Agostini fell victim to a big third inning in which the Golden Eagles pinned on their only two runs of the contest with half of their total hits with two going for extra bases.
In Game 2, every Ranger reached base at least once and Martinez stayed hot, drawing first blood with a 2-run double to right-center in the first inning, putting Drew out to a 2-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, The Golden Eagles put up another big frame, complete with a 2-run homer – taking a 3-2 lead before the Rangers tied it 3-3 after the third inning. St. Joseph's would go on to notch six unanswered runs to take the game.
Drew will return to both the Drew Softball Complex and Landmark Conference action on Saturday, April 4
th for a double dip against Moravian College with Game 1 slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
