Old Westbury Outlasts Baseball, 5-3, on Long Island

WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 14, 2015) – The Drew University baseball team suffered a 5-3 setback after a back-and-forth battle at SUNY College at Old Westbury on Tuesday evening.

Juniors Bobby Miskura and Anthony Feltre picked up two hits apiece for the Rangers (10-17), and sophomore right fielder Mike DiDonato recorded his eighth RBI in his last four games played. The Rangers drew nine walks in a wild game for both pitching staffs that doled out a total of 16 base on balls.

The Panthers (13-8) pounced on the Rangers early with a quick run in the bottom of the first against Drew senior starter Leo Ruiz. The Rangers were swift to get the run back for their starter in the top of the second, where Miskura led off the frame with a single.

Two walks later, the bases were loaded for the red-hot DiDonato. The sophomore recorded his eighth RBI in four games by drawing the bases-loaded walk and forcing home Miskura to tie the game at 1-1.

Miskura had his hand on the Rangers' go-ahead run in the top of the third, this time starting things off with a two-out double. Feltre and sophomore designated hitter Mike Miraglia made it three straight hits for the Rangers to again load the bases. A passed ball during the next at-bat scored Miskura for an unearned run and a 2-1 Drew lead.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Fitzpatrick took over for Drew in the fourth, and allowed an inherited run to score. The score was tied up at 2-2 heading into the fifth inning, at which point the Panthers lost the strike zone. Senior center fielder Al Krause led off the inning with a single, then three straight walks – capped off by an RBI walk by senior catcher Robert Auletti – put Drew ahead 3-2.

The Panthers fought back in the latter innings, scoring once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.

Drew's best shot to swing the momentum back in its favor came in the final scheduled inning. The Rangers threatened in the ninth as Miskura drew a one-out walk, and Feltre followed with his second base hit of the day. Drew would get a runner as far as third base, but the Old Westbury closer slammed the door on the non-conference victory.

Drew continues non-conference play on Wednesday, April 15 with a trip to City College of New York with first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.
