MADISON, N.J. (April 15, 2015) – Sophomore goalkeeper
Gianna Minogue saved a career-high 18 shots as the Drew University women's lacrosse team handed Scranton University its first Landmark Conference loss of the season with a 15-12 win.
The Rangers (8-4, 3-2) inserted themselves directly into the playoff conversation, now standing in third place in the conference. Despite being outshot 41-27, The Rangers tallied 15 goals, five of which came from senior attacker
Nikki Kleiman, her third such game in a row.
Freshman midfielder
Maddie Spiess tallied another hat trick, marking the fifth time she has accomplished the feat in her young career. Freshman midfielder
Nicole Kinney netted two goals, the second time she's done that in her career. The constant contributor, senior midfielder
Krysta Cento scored three times on a team-high 8 shots. Sophomore midfielder
Morgan Mason added four points to the win.
Minogue's lockdown performance placed her in the record books with the 9
th most single-game saves in program history.
"It came a lot from trusting my defense," Minogue reflected, "I knew they would be there on the clears and the collapse." "It's incredible, I'm overwhelmed, we had to win this game. Today is a turning point for us."
The Royals (5-7, 3-1) got the scoring started early, converting just 20 seconds into play. The Ranger defense would hold them but got too aggressive, resulting in a free position try that snuck under Minogue. The score stood at 2-0 with 24 minutes to go in the first but wouldn't last long.
Spiess danced into the zone, waving her stick in the air keep the ball safe from defenders' flailing attempts to knock it free. She kept it high as she flicked one over the goalie's shoulder, putting the Rangers on the board. The score was the California native's 18
th of the year.
Meanwhile, the co-captains, Cento and Kleiman, fresh off a combined 18-point output four days ago against Elizabethtown, traded goals to give Drew a 3-2 lead as the teams approached the 20-minute mark of the first half.
With just ten minutes remaining in the half, Kinney sent in the fourth goal of her career to tie up the score at 6 with 10 minutes to play. The Rangers' 8
th goal would come off the stick of Kinney just eight minutes later, when she slung in the free position try.
The Rangers came storming out of the half, with Kleiman and Cento scoring the tying and go-ahead goals within the first eight minutes. The 10-9 Ranger lead would last until Scranton tied it at 10 with 20 minutes to play.
Fast-forward 10 minutes and the score stood at 12-12 before a laser of a pass from sophomore
Anna Fiorini found Cento, who drove it for the 13
th Drew point and the game-winning goal.
The victory was the Rangers' final regular season home game of the year and the team will embark on a 3-game road trip culminating in a pivotal date with Goucher on the 25
th. But first, they must play two non-conference games, the first of which takes place on Sunday, April 19
th at 12:00 p.m. as Drew faces St. Joseph's (L.I.) College.
