ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (April 19, 2015) – The Drew University baseball team accomplished it's fifth Landmark Conference victory in its last six league games by defeating conference-rival Elizabethtown College, 11-7, in the three-game series finale and taking two out of three in the series.
Â
The rubber match triumph has positioned the Rangers just a game out of second place with two teams to hop. They currently stand in fourth with a 10-8 conference record. A significant three-game series with first place The University of Scranton awaits them next weekend on the road to close out the regular season.
Â
But on Sunday, the Rangers offense stole the show again. Fresh off of a record-setting hit total the previous day that resulted in 14 runs, Drew threw up double digits for a second time. That's 25 runs in their last two games.
Â
Sophomore catcher
Mike Miraglia refuses to stop hitting. Forget the five-game hitting streak and ignore the .375 batting average that ranks second on the team. After driving in four on Sunday, Miraglia has nine RBIs in his last two games. The catcher drove in two with a poke up the middle in the first that gave the Rangers a 3-0 lead. He then drove in two more in the fourth with a right field double that extended that lead to 10-2. The double was Miraglia's ninth extra-base hit of the season, tops on the team.
Â
The Ranger attack, however, was anything but a one-man show as every player in the starting lineup tallied at least a hit. Sophomore team batting leader (.392) and right fielder
Mike DiDonato pitched in three hits for the second straight game. The sophomore ripped a right field triple in the fourth shortly after a double from senior designated hitter
J.C. Rasic found the gap.
Â
Drew batted around in the fourth, hit for extra bases four times and scored eight runs in the decisive frame. The eight-run output in the fourth is far and away the most Ranger runs scored in an inning this season.
Â
The 5-6-7 spots in the order, which included junior second baseman
Anthony Feltre as well as Miraglia and Rasic went a combined 5-for-15, and drove in eight runs with Feltre drawing first blood with an RBI single in the first.
Â
Drew's party would come to a halt after the fourth as the Blue Jay bullpen handled the next five innings without allowing a run but the mid-game onslaught would prove to be all Drew needed to take the game, and the series.
Â
Junior southpaw
Dylan Baxter earned his first victory of the year, tossing over 100 pitches in six innings of work while allowing four earned runs.
Â
Next, the Rangers travel to Staten Island, N.Y. to square off with the aptly named College of Staten Island in non-conference action for the annual Grace Hilery Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The game will take place on Tuesday, April 21
st at 7:00 p.m.
