MADISON, N.J. (April 23, 2015) – Thirteen scoreless innings of starting pitching and two crooked numbers were all the Drew University softball team needed to sweep a doubleheader with New Jersey City University, as the Rangers outscored them 15-0 in the twin bill.
Â
Sophomore starting pitcher
Emma Agostini provided a solid foundation for the Drew offense to work off of. The right-handed hurler, after allowing a single to begin the third, proceeded to retire the next 12 Gothic Knights, striking out a total of five in the process and ending the game.
Â
Not to be outdone, senior Game 2 starter
Laura D'Ornellas went seven scoreless in her effort, also allowing just two singles.
Â
The two-hit outing in Game 1 was Agostini's best of the year, and lowered her earned run average for the season to a team-best 4.58. D'Ornellas, meanwhile, notched her team-best fourth win of the season with her sparkling Game 2 performance in the circle.
Â
Senior catcher
Kate McNamara was one of many productive Rangers, going a combined 4-for-5 at the dish with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman second baseman
Danielle Martinez went a combined 3-for-6 with both an RBI and a run scored. As if D'Ornellas' stellar work in the circle wasn't enough, the Game 1 first baseman also took a 3-for-6 day pitching in two ribbies and touching home with a run.Â
Â
Up until the final frame, the non-conference contest cruised along innocently enough. The starters were dealing and the only run of the game came off of Drew's bat. After McNamara laced a double to left, D'Ornellas knocked her in with a single up the middle in the very next at-bat. Drew's 1-0 lead after four would hold until the bottom of the sixth, when Drew erupted.
Â
Just like the Rangers' most recent conversion, McNamara kicked the home half of the sixth off by reaching base, this time with a walk. D'Ornellas reached again before Martinez, presumably to sacrifice, laid down a beauty of a bunt that allowed her, and everyone else, to reach. The bases were loaded with no one out. A couple of RBI singles from sophomore shortstop
Meghan McGuire and the day's designated player, freshman
Kira Scarangella, lifted the score to 3-0. The RBI was the first of Scarangella's young career.
Â
After some defensive miscues, the team's leading hitter, freshman center fielder
Heather Ronchi strode to the plate and promptly broke the contest open with a left field double that chased home two. She now boasts an impressive slash line of .340/.393/.427 with 21 RBIs, 5 of which came in the doubleheader.
Â
The contest would end in six and take the Rangers to Game 2.
Â
The second half of the twin bill featured more of the same. Another game-breaking 2-run double for Ronchi, this one in the fourth, and another Scarangella RBI, which proved to be the final run of the game.
Â
Ronchi wouldn't wait to drive home runs though, contributing in the very first inning of Game 2 with a center field single to get the scoring underway.
Â
McNamara would pitch in an RBI single in the third before Ronchi's fourth inning, game breaking rip.
Â
The shutout was a success and the Rangers will look to transfer some of this positive energy into conference play. They travel to square off against the 4
th place University of Scranton in Landmark play. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, April 25
