SCRANTON, Pa. (April 26, 2015) – The 2015 season came to a close for the Drew University baseball team on Sunday in the Landmark Conference series finale at The University of Scranton after an 8-2 loss.
Â
The loss eliminated the Rangers (13-23, 10-11) from Landmark Conference Championships contention. Scranton will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and will host the semifinal series against No. 4 The Catholic University of America, who needed to beat Juniata or receive the Drew loss to clinch its playoff berth.
Â
Senior center fielder
Al Krause finished his final career series on a hot streak, going 2-for-4 with a run in the finale to finish the three-game set 6-for-11 at the plate. Senior shortstop
Steve Kowalski knocked in a run in his final game, while junior second baseman
Anthony Feltre (3-for-4) and sophomore catcher
Mike Miraglia (2-for-4) both had multi-hit games on Sunday.
Â
Despite already locking up the playoffs' No. 1 seed, the Royals (21-12, 16-5) didn't waste much time in trying to end the regular season on a high note. Scranton pushed two runs across with a two-run single in the first, then extended the lead to 3-0 in the third with a solo home run.
Â
Drew got its first run in the fourth on Feltre's RBI double to plate Krause, but the Royals answered with three of their own in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Â
The Rangers had a good start to their fifth frame, getting runners to first and third with one out. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Kowalski recorded the RBI groundout to score senior
J.C. Rasic. That would be the final run of the game for Drew, who allowed two more in the sixth with a two-run single to give Scranton the 8-2 advantage.
