Stevens Sweeps Season Series With 5-2 Win at the Doc

MADISON, N.J. (April 8, 2015) – The Drew University baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Stevens Institute of Technology in non-conference action on an unseasonably cold Wednesday afternoon at Doc Young Field.

Sophomore catcher Mike Miraglia reached base in his first four at-bats, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and adding a bases-loaded walk for an RBI. Junior first baseman Bobby Miskura also picked up a trio of base hits, batting 3-for-4 and reaching on a walk.

Stevens (14-9) sweeps the season home-and-home series against the Rangers (7-16). The season opener for both sides played on Feb. 25 ended in a 9-2 victory for the Ducks.

The Ducks struck first on Wednesday with a run in the top of the second, but it could have been more if it were not for Drew senior starting pitcher Leo Ruiz. The senior hurler was faced with a bases-loaded, no out situation, but allowed just one run to score on a sacrifice fly. Ruiz got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to escape further damage.

Ruiz (1-1) went 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and three walks with two strikeouts, and took the loss after allowing four earned runs.

The Rangers went to bat for Ruiz in the bottom of the second, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI from freshman center fielder Ryan Sabbag to score Miraglia, who led off the inning with a double. Drew took a 2-1 lead in the third when Miraglia picked up the RBI by drawing a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk.

Ruiz held the lead until the top of the fifth, when three hits turned into three runs across the plate for the Ducks and Stevens led it 4-2.  The visitors also benefitted from a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases in the fateful frame.

The Ducks added an insurance run in the eighth, and their closer, Ryan Patterson, slammed the door in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

The Rangers pounded out a double-digit (13) hitting attack for the 12th time this season.

Drew resumes Landmark Conference play on Saturday, April 11 against The Catholic University of America at Doc Young Field. First pitch of a Senior Day doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
