GLENSIDE, Pa. (May 6, 2015) – The fifth-seeded Drew University women's lacrosse team concluded the 2015 season with a 14-11 loss at No. 4 Arcadia University in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Championships on Wednesday afternoon.
With two goals and two assists, senior midfielder
Krysta Cento became the fifth player in program history, and second this year following
Nikki Kleiman, to join the 300 Career Points Club. She will graduate with 303 points. Kleiman added four goals on Wednesday to bring her career point total to 354, just six points away from tying the program record. The Rangers finish the spring with a 9-7 record.
Three minutes into the contest, the 2015 Landmark Conference Player of the Year brought her goal scoring talent to the postseason. Kleiman made it 1-0 Drew with a free position shot that found the back of the net. Three minutes later, sophomore attacker
Theresa Shafron similarly converted a free position shot for the early 2-0 lead, and Cento added an unassisted blast for the 3-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the half.
Despite a couple of saves from Minogue, the Knights (13-7) fought back to slowly erase the early deficit. Arcadia scored at the 17:55 mark for their first goal, but Drew freshman
Nicole Kinney held the Rangers' advantage at three goals with a marker immediately after Arcadia's first goal.
Arcadia scored at the midway point of the half only to again have the goal negated by a quick answer from Drew, this time from the stick of freshman
Sage Johnson just 20 seconds after the Knights' goal. One more stint of trading goals led to a 6-3 Rangers lead after Cento's second goal with 8:36 to play in the opening period.
The Knights would go on their first goal-scoring run of the contest starting at the 4:43 mark and eventually tying the game 6-6 before halftime. The game-tying goal came with just 15 seconds on the clock and Arcadia went into the intermission with the momentum.
The momentum proved vital as the Knights took just 2:30 into the second half to take a 7-6 lead. Kleiman provided the Drew answer just 30 seconds later to knot the score at 7-all.
Arcadia's game-changing run would begin at the 24:19 mark. Playing a woman down due to a yellow card, the Knights still managed to take the 8-7 lead and then string together four straight goals, including another woman-down tally, to lead the Rangers 11-7. A goal by freshman
Maddie Spiess halted the Arcadia run, but the damage was done. Two more goals put Arcadia ahead 13-8 with 11:29 remaining in the ECAC quarterfinal.
Kleiman, with the help of Cento, attempted a Drew comeback late in the half with back-to-back goals to bring the deficit to 13-10, but an insurance goal by Arcadia with five minutes to play put the game out of reach for the Rangers.
