MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2015) – The Drew University field hockey team began its season in record-shattering style, defeating Cedar Crest College 13-2 on Opening Night at Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers, with 13 goals, tied a five-year-old Landmark Conference record held by Catholic. The 13-goal output also broke the school record, which previously stood at 12, set in 2013.
Senior midfielder
Michelle Fallon, who had just been named team captain, quickly set out to defend her title. Fallon broke the school record for points in a game with 14. She also broke the assists in a game record with four. Fallon's record-breaking goal came in the 49
th minute when she collected a feed from senior forward
Kirby Clark and slammed home the Rangers' 10
th goal of the evening. Drew's 29-year old record of 5 goals in a game has now been tied by Fallon.
Fallon's momentous achievement ranks among the greatest in conference history. Fallon has shattered the record for points in a game, which previously stood at 10 and was set in 2007.
Fallon is convinced this team-wide achievement will earn Drew the recognition it deserves within the Landmark.
"We've been ranked last in our conference by the coaches, so this is a fantastic confidence boost," Fallon said.
"We typically look to score within the first 10 minutes, tonight we scored within the first two. This was a great way to start the season." Fallon had never scored more than a single goal in one contest in her Drew career. The masterful opening night performance etched Fallon's name in Ranger legacy and got her final season in Blue and Green off to a historic beginning.
The Rangers outshot the Falcons 33-5, with Fallon leading the way with 11.
Sophomore forward
Madi Sheetz scored more goals in this game than she had all of last season. Her four-goal output featured a sparkling one-timer off a long cross from Fallon in the 47
th minute. The goal gave Drew an 8-1 lead.
Sophomore midfielder
Huma Sheikh notched the first score of the season. Ten yards out, and staying low to the ground with quick steps, she eluded the keeper and ripped a sharp shot low and past the Falcons' keeper.
Sophomore defender
Michele Pozyc contributed two goals of her own on an efficient two shots.
Clark tried six shots and recorded three points.
The 2015 Rangers, presence has been felt in conference record books just one game into the season and Drew will look to use this as a launching pad to begin their season. Their next contest will come as a part of Fall Fest as they host Lebanon Valley College on Friday, Sept. 4
