ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (Jan. 13, 2016) – The Drew University women's basketball team fell at Elizabethtown College, 65-50, in Landmark Conference action on the road Wednesday evening.
Senior forward
Courtney Stephens recorded her sixth double-double of the year – and 18
th of her career – with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while junior guard
Hannah Miller hit four 3-pointers en route to leading the Rangers (6-10, 3-4) in scoring with 16 points. Freshman guard
Hailey Stine netted a career-high 10 points while also playing a season-high 28 minutes.
After the Blue Jays (8-5, 4-3) claimed the first period, 19-12, the Rangers bounced back in the second behind an 8-2 run that spanned four minutes and featured buckets by four different Rangers. Elizabethtown worked its lead back to seven points at 27-20 with 3:02 to play in the half before Drew ended the period on a 5-0 run, including a buzzer-beating, coast-to-coast jumper by junior forward
Sam Lane to send the Rangers to halftime down 27-25.
The Jays would get those five points back to start the third period as turnover woes haunted Drew and Elizabethtown made them pay on the other end. A layup by Stephens and a three-pointer by Miller helped Drew keep pace, but the Blue Jays used another quick 5-0 run capitalized by a three-pointer to take a 39-30 lead with 3:01 left in the third. Stine hit her second three-pointer of the contest to interrupt the scoring run, but Elizabethtown responded with another spurt of eight straight points to end the period up 47-33 and in control on the game.
The run stretched to 10-0 at the start of the fourth, but Miller heated up by scoring Drew's next eight points to keep the deficit at a manageable distance. Elizabethtown would maintain its double-digit lead down the stretch to claim the victory on its own court.
Drew was hurt by 20 turnovers that led to 24 points on the other end of the floor, while the Blue Jays had just nine turnovers. The battle in the paint was fairly even with Drew holding a slight edge in rebounding, 36-34, and E-Town winning the points in the paint, 22-20. The difference came from the three-point line, where the Blue Jays shot 8-of-15 (53%) compared to the Rangers' 7-of-22 mark (32%).
The Rangers return home on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m. to continue Landmark Conference play against Susquehanna University in Baldwin Gymnasium.
