Field Hockey Seniors Saluted in Season Finale Setback

MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2016) – The Drew University field hockey team celebrated its senior class and wrapped up the 2016 season with a 3-1 loss to Goucher College at Ranger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

By the Numbers: The Rangers celebrated the careers of two seniors, Cailyn Breski and Huma Sheikh, congratulating them on their careers and wishing them well in all that the future holds. The loss dropped Drew's final record to 4-13, while the Gophers clinched a Landmark Conference playoff berth with an 8-8 overall record and 3-4 conference mark.

Top Performers: Junior Madi Sheetz concluded a breakout season with her 10th goal to cut the Goucher lead to 2-1 midway through the second half, sophomore Ryann Callaghan made nine saves to run her career total to 332, which ranks eighth all-time. Junior Michele Pozyc made a defensive save to add to her school and conference career record, which now stands at 43.

Turning Point: The Gophers took the always-dangerous 2-0 lead in the 51st minute by cleaning up a missed clear close to the cage. Despite Sheetz cutting the lead in half four minutes later, Goucher again provided some cushion with a tally in the 60th minute from an almost impossible angle shot from the baseline that just scooted past Callaghan and tucked inside the far post.

Other Highlights: Sheikh took a shot on goal that needed saving in her final contest as a Ranger, and Pozyc took the shot that led the Sheetz's goal. Her blast from the top of the circle was cleared off the line by a defensive save, subsequently falling to the stick of Sheetz for the score.

Stat Sheet: Goucher outshot the Rangers, 16-4, with 12 of those shots on target. The Gophers also had a dominating advantage in penalty corners, taking 15 to Drew's four.
