FORT PIERCE, FL. (Mar. 7, 2016) --Â
With a combination of scrappy, practical offense and solid pitching, the Drew University baseball team won its third game of the season, 4-3, over Kenyon University on Monday afternoon.Â
Junior starting pitcher
Ryan Fitzpatrick gave the Rangers (3-2) depth and quality. The right-hander worked seven and two-thirds innings, striking out six, and allowing three earned runs before relinquishing the game to the bullpen in the eighth. Freshman reliever
Joshua Williams gave Drew an inning and a third of scoreless ball to end the game against Kenyon (1-2) and get him his first collegiate victory.
Â
Junior leftfielder
Tommy Broyles prolonged his knack to come through in the clutch with an 8
th inning single that would prove to be the winning run. With two walks on the day, senior second baseman
Anthony Feltre is now tied for the team lead with four, an invaluable trait for a leadoff man. Junior third baseman
Jonathan Rodrigues went 2-for-4 and scored a run in the victory.
Â
Drew regained its lead in the seventh. After the first two Rangers reached, Feltre sacrificed the runners over. Senior first baseman
Bobby Miskura followed up by making contact and driving in the go-ahead run on a groundout. The Lords came right back in the eighth to tie things up at 3-3.
Â
In the end it was late-game extraordinaire Broyles who got the key knock. Junior outfielder
Marc Cohen took over on the base paths and aggressively scored following a failed Kenyon double play.
Â
A pair of sacrifice flies satisfied Drew's scoring effort in the early going as they made the most with the three hits they had accrued until that point. The teams matched single runs throughout the contest before Drew went ahead in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
The Rangers are 2-for-3 so far in their Florida spring training trip. With five games to go, the next will be against Hilbert College on Tuesday, Mar. 8
th at 11:00 a.m.Â
