Spiess Spots Drew Five Goals in Loss at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. (March 8, 2016) – Sophomore midfielder Maddie Spiess fired home a career-high five goals in a 15-10 setback to Chapman University in the first game of a Spring Break tour of California on Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (5-1) pounced on the Rangers (1-3) early for a 5-1 lead, and later a 9-2 advantage.  However, Spiess and the Rangers were up for a fight on the West Coast as the sophomore scored Drew's first three goals and sparked the Rangers back into the game. The Blue & Green got the lead down to three on two different occasions late in the second half, but Chapman defended its home turf despite the Rangers' persistent bounce-back mentality.

Junior midfielder Morgan Mason notched her third hat trick in as many games, while reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week Juliana Strazulo and Nicole Kinney each pitched in a goal. Strazulo was dominant in the ball control game, causing a career-high five turnovers, controlling five draws and scooping up three ground balls.

Junior goalkeeper Gianna Minogue made double-digit saves (11) for the third straight game.

Facing the 9-2 deficit, Spiess and Mason went back-to-back on unassisted goals about two minutes apart. Neither team would score over the last three minutes of the opening half and the score was set at 9-4 in favor of Chapman heading into halftime.

Chapman added its 10th goal a few minutes into the second half, but Drew continued to make up ground with a goal from Kinney, which was assisted by Spiess for Drew's only helper of the day. Spiess won the ensuing draw control and got the ball to Mason, who swiftly attacked goal and scored Drew's second goal in a span of 26 seconds.

The two sides would trade goals until the 11:43 to go mark, when the Rangers put together another string of goals with Mason's third to bring Drew within three, 12-9. Chapman was successful at stopping the run there, and despite Spiess' fifth tally of the contest to make it 13-10, the Panthers' offense was clicking at the perfect time as they added two more insurance goals down the stretch for the final score of 15-10.

The Rangers get another crack at a California team on Thursday, March 10 at Pomona-Pitzer College at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
