MADISON, N.J. (April 1, 2016) – Before lightning struck and ended the Drew University baseball team's Landmark Conference series opener against Juniata College early, the Eagles struck for four runs to win the shortened six-inning contest, 4-0, on Friday at Doc Young Field. Drew drops to 10-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Â
Top Performers: Junior third baseman
Jonathan Rodrigues was 1-for-1 with a walk, and senior starting pitcher
Dylan Baxter only had one rocky inning in an otherwise fantastic start. The captain struck out seven Eagles in six innings of work, while allowing four runs (three earned) and eight hits.
Â
The Turning Point: The Eagles (7-13, 3-4) scored an unearned run thanks to a Drew defensive miscue in the first inning, which is all the offense they would need in the weather shortened contest. Baxter was working efficiently and effectively, getting ahead in counts and keep his defense on their toes. However, one big inning for Juniata in the fifth resulted in four hits and three runs.
Â
Other Highlights: Junior catcher
Mike Miraglia and junior designated hitter
Tommy Broyles picked up hits in back-to-back at-bats in the fourth, the first base hits against Juniata starting pitcher, Jesse Beeler. Beeler improved to 2-4 with the six-inning shutout.
Â
Up Next: The Rangers wrap up their series with Juniata on Saturday, April 2 with a doubleheader at Doc Young Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
