Rangers Salvage Series Finale at Catholic, 12-6

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 17, 2016) – The Drew University baseball team salvaged the series finale of a three-game set at The Catholic University of America (14-17, 5-10) with a 12-6 victory on a summerlike Sunday afternoon.

Top Performers: Senior second baseman Anthony Feltre (4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), senior first baseman Bobby Miskura (3-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBIs) and sophomore shortstop Isaiah Mateo (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs) all had multiple hits and multiple runs driven in for the Rangers (15-16, 8-7).

Junior designated hitter Dan Pfefferkorn went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and finishes the Catholic series 3-for-6 while taking the team lead in batting average with a .391. Junior pitcher Ryan Fitzpatrick picked up the win on the mound, throwing 5.2 innings with four runs (three earned), seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Turning Point: The Rangers' six-run third inning broke it open. With the bases loaded and no outs, junior catcher Mike Miraglia got an RBI groundout. With first base free, the Cardinals chose to intentionally walk cleanup hitter Tommy Broyles to bring up Pfefferkorn, who made Catholic pay with a two-run single up the middle to put Drew ahead 4-1.

Junior third baseman Jonathan Rodrigues drew a bases loaded walk and Mateo added a two-run single later in the frame to put the Rangers comfortably ahead 7-1.

Other Highlights: Drew's 14-hit, 12-run attack had its tone set early by Feltre in the top of the first. His first of four base hits was a hard-hit double down the left field line and Miraglia quickly singled him home in the next at-bat for the 1-0 advantage.

Feltre doubled again in the fifth, this time with runners on. The two-run hit put the Rangers ahead 10-1 before Pfefferkorn recorded his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice bunt in the sixth.

Playoff Picture: The Rangers move into a three-way tie for third place in the Landmark Conference standings with two series remaining in 2016. Drew is tied with The University of Scranton and Moravian College, the latter of whom Drew holds a tiebreaker against with a 2-1 season series win. Drew's remaining opponents are Elizabethtown College, who sits in second place at 9-6, and Scranton. Susquehanna University has firm control of first place at 13-2.

Up Next: The Rangers have two high-profile non-conference games lined up this week. Drew travels to College of Staten Island for the annual Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. They return to Madison on Wednesday, April 20 to host the second annual Madison Avenue Challenge against rival FDU-Florham at Dodge Field at 6:00 p.m.
