Scranton Sweeps Softball to Conclude 2016 Season

MADISON, N.J. (April 30, 2016) – The 2016 season came to an end for the Drew University softball team at home on Saturday with a pair of losses (11-7, 9-0) to The University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference finale.

Top Performers: Sophomores Heather Ronchi, Danielle Martinez and Brooke Adams all drove in two runs in Game 1, while Adams joined junior Meghan McGuire was the only Ranger to hit in both ends of the Landmark doubleheader against the Royals (20-14, 6-6).

Turning Point: The conference foes traded punches in a high-scoring second inning. Scranton took a 5-2 lead after a five-spot in the top of the frame before the Rangers (13-23, 2-10) answered with three runs in the bottom half on McGuire's RBI infield single, Ronchi's bases-loaded walk and Martinez's run-scoring single up the middle.

With the score knotted at 5-5, Scranton quickly took control in the top of the third with another five runs for the 10-5 lead.

Other Highlights: A hit and two walks led to three runs scored by Drew's leadoff hitter, junior outfielder Phylicia Pellot in Game 1. In the second game, it took the Royals five innings to get to Drew freshman starter Bethany Budner, who surrendered the first runs of the game on a three-run home run with two outs in the fifth. She had allowed three hits through the first four innings.
