Baseball Falls to William Paterson, 7-6, in Final Frame

MADISON, N.J. (Feb. 28, 2017) – The Drew University baseball team made two comebacks, including one from a four-run deficit, but William Paterson University pushed across the winning run in the final inning to earn a 7-6 win at Doc Young Field on Tuesday afternoon.

By the Numbers
The Rangers lose for the first time in 2017, falling to 2-1 overall and 1-1 at The Doc. The Pioneers improve to 1-0-1 after their season opener was called a tie due to darkness. This game was called after eight innings due to darkness.

Top Performers
• Senior catcher Mike Miraglia continues his RBI streak to start the season, knocking in a run for the third straight game. He was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Drew's four-run fifth inning.
• Senior first baseman Tommy Broyles hit 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the third and fifth innings.
• Sophomore Jayson Mitch knocked a game-tying two-run single through the right side to complete the Rangers' comeback from a four-run deficit in the fifth inning.

Turning Point
After Drew erased its second deficit of the game in the seventh – tying the contest at 6-6 on an error – William Paterson went ahead for good on a one-out RBI double in the top of the eighth. After Drew's 1-2-3 bottom of the frame, the game was called due to darkness at 5:33 p.m.

Highlights
• Down 5-1 in the fifth, sophomore third baseman Eric DiPietro started the comeback with a leadoff single. One out later, senior center fielder Marc Cohen singled, followed by a walk to junior right fielder Ryan Sabbag loaded the bases for Broyles. The senior first baseman delivered a sacrifice fly to plate DiPietro before Miraglia and Mitch's run-scoring hits to tie the game at 5-5.
• The seesaw tipped back in favor of the Pioneers in the seventh frame after a leadoff triple came home on a one-out fielder's choice. Drew tied it up again in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a hit by pitch, a sacrifice bunt from senior Richie Poland and a throwing error that scooted out of play to advance the pinch runner, sophomore Mike Pettigrew, home for the 6-6 tie.

Up Next
The Rangers begin a seven-game trip to the Sunshine State on Saturday, March 4 with a game against Wilkes University at 11:30 a.m. in Fort Pierce, Fla.
