Devils Edge Softball 8-6 in Battle of Madison Avenue

MADISON, N.J. (April 12, 2017) – FDU-Florham claimed the softball iteration of the 2017 Battle of Madison Avenue with an 8-6 win over Drew University on Wednesday at McManus Field.

By the Numbers: The Rangers and Devils played just one game, with FDU-Florham improving to 9-16 on the year and Drew falling to 4-15.

Top Performers
• Junior second baseman Madi Sheetz led Drew at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, including an RBI single in the top of the seventh to start a comeback rally down 8-5.
• Junior third baseman Lauren Mastropierro was 2-for-4 against Devils pitching with hard-hit singles in the third and seventh innings.

The Difference: Down 8-4 with their last licks in the seventh, Drew loaded the bases with one after Mastropierro's single. Sheetz rocked a base hit to center to make it 8-5, but the Devils coaxed an infield fly for the second out. Drew managed one more run on sophomore right fielder Katie Grodski's bases-loaded walk, but the rally stopped there.

Highlights
• Junior catcher Heather Ronchi knocked in her team-leading 10th RBI of the season in the top of the first to score senior center fielder Phylicia Pellot, who led off the game with a walk and stole second base during Ronchi's at-bat.
• The Rangers gave up the lead in the bottom of the first, but took it back with two runs in the second on sophomore first baseman Cara O'Leary's bases-loaded walk and Pellot's RBI groundout.
• Senior pitcher Emma Agostini backed up her starting effort with an RBI double in the third to give her side a 4-1 lead.
• FDU played three runs in each the third and fourth innings to jump ahead 7-4 on the strength of a solo home run, a double and two sacrifice flies.

Up Next: The Rangers finally make up their Landmark Conference doubleheader against Elizabethtown College on Friday, April 14 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
