Top Performers
• Game 1 belonged to Broyles,
who blossomed from his usual closers role in this must-have game. He turned in a seven inning outing punctuated by two huge rally-killing strikeouts to end a hard-working sixth. Broyles' final line stood with only one earned run over three hits, two walks, and five K's after going the full seven. The senior turned in a nearly identical start against Juniata a week ago and has allowed just two earned runs and six hits in his last 14 innings as a starter. The win bumps Broyles' record to 4-0.
• Sophomore shortstop
Zach Lipshitz ripped a 2-run double to straightaway left for Drew's game-winning hit to close out a 3-run second inning. The leadoff shortstop for both games went a combined 2-for-6 with three RBIs in the twin bill.
• Sophomore left fielder
Jayson Mitch combined to go 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, turning in efficient baserunning and a solidly played left field and to force the issue for Drew. Mitch stole a base in Game 1 and doubled in Game 2.Â
Game 1 Highlights
• Junior outfielder
Ryan Sabbag notched the first run for Drew when he singled in the beginning of the second inning. Sabbag chased home freshman DH
Anthony Tagliaferro, who doubled to start the inning.
• Despite a laborious sixth in Game 1, Broyles sprinted out there for a 1-2-3 seventh, not only locking in a complete Game 1, but preserving bullpen arms for the second half.Â
• After walking in the second inning of Game 1, sophomore outfielder
Jayson Mitch scored all the way from first base on Lipshitz's double, cutting the bases sharply to add important insurance.
Â
Game 2 Highlights
• In the bottom of the fifth, senior center fielder
Marc Cohen drilled a double to left-center that chased home Drew's first two runs of the contest. They were Cohen's 13
th and 14
th RBIs of the year.
• Lipshitz added an RBI single in the same inning when he poked one back up the middle to chase Cohen. The knock was Lipshitz's 27
th of the year, good for the team lead.
• Drew earned three consecutive hits in the fifth inning that included both Cohen and Mitch's doubles, everyone came around to score to trim the deficit to 5-3.Â
